I have a 20g tank with a decoration that looks like a tree root stump made of plastic. It's rather nice looking, and I like it in the tank. It is hollow. So, it has 3 small holes and one large hole in the bottom of the decoration to allow water in so it 'sinks'. I have a black catfish with white spots (not sure of it's name) that digs under the gravel and enters the decoration in the large hole. I didn't know it was in there when I cleaned the tank and took out the decoration. I ended up finding my fish shortly there after flopping around on the floor. I'd like to close this large hole with some window screen. Here's my question: what adhesive would be safe for this job?

They make some reef epoxies that are safe for tanks, not sure about the screen though.Id try to wedge a rock in it first.Since he likes a dark spot you should make him a cave of some sort

Ron-- Why take it out to clean the tank? Also now that you know that the catfish likes it just check for it before you need to clean it out.
The following statement is true. The previous statement was false.

I took it out because the gravel under it was covered in some sort of slime that I wanted to clean up. I need to get him a cave, I agree, but I want to prevent him from going in there again, and a rock would prevent water from going in to help it 'sink'.

water will still displace the air through the other holes, you may just have to hold it at an angle. I don't see why you need to remove it from the tank completely, you could just put it in another spot while you clean the gravel. If the fish wants it for a hidding spot, just leave it be...you'll just have to give him another one if you block up this one.
There! You have a bigger tank! Will you stop plotting my death now??

Lol I doubt you could find a rock that would plug it that neatly.

Wonder what that slime under it was? Was it clear?
