OK. I just received my Cardinals via mail order. There are 7 DOA and 4 belly-up still breathing.

My first DOA thru mail order...to be honest with you this isnt a suprise with these fish.

I am acclimating them now, I will report back with survival % when crunch time has passed. Then I will update again maybe like a week later.

Dan,
40 of them are alive and swimming. Since I posted two have began floating but breathing. I am actually quite happy that more werent DOA.

I am assuming they put extra in the bag because the math doesnt add up to 50. I counted the little suckers as I put them into the QT, I counted 42 but I got everyone that was appeared to be upright....a little later 2 were showing bad signs so I removed them.

The sickly ones are in their own tank. The remaining 40 are in a heavily planted tank. They are in two seperate groups...I peeked in before I left and they were starting to color up back to normal.

Oh I forgot to say how many I got. I ordered 50. 7 DOA Cardinals is a good thing right? I didnt expect all of them to live...but hey its better survival % then Project Cardinal Tetra I. I wish none of them died.

I have never done mail order fish shopping so I am bit un-educated about good/acceptable survival rates for different species. With that said, seven DOA and a few more that don't look so good who are in their own tank seems a bit excessive to me.

I may be wrong but I'm going to assume that you went with over night shipping. If the other three die, thats 20% of your order essentially DOA. Thats pretty high.

If you went with over night, then I'll assume that the fish arrived no more than two days after you ordered them. Healthy fish don't die in two days. I totally understand that being shipped is stressful on fish. However, when 20% of the the package is dead or dying, I'd say either the place you got them from wasn't careful enough when they packaged them or the place you got them from is shipping sickly fish. Thats just my opinion anyway.

On a lighter note, I bet the 40 fish in the planted tank looks exceptionally good. They are great looking fish even in a "blah" fish tank. I'm sure that they look totally awesome against all of the plants.

I was thinking the same thing! Would it be better to use small groups?

Two bags....50 was the total count but they added extra or miscounted in my favor. I counted 28 in the one large bag. The same bag my Discus came in....seems to hold about a gallon of water.

Overnight ALWAYS...I even ship my plants overnight....why risk it? Unless the plant seller says otherwise I always pick NEXT DAY.

Wow when I saw 20% I was shocked...it really is that much huh.....well let me do a total count then well do the math over...because they did ship more then 50.

I read a post online about someone buying them from the well known and trusted lfs here in PA...well he said they all died..alot of DOA. I am sorta using that as a reference and thinking that if I am over 50% I will be satisfied.

I didnt really have time to enjoy them yet. I will post a pic!!!! in a few minutes.

OK well....20% it is....so far...another one bites the dust.

I expected this for the first few days...pretty much the reason I had ordered 50.

Can you honestly recommend a fish store that will ship me Cardinals without any DOAs? Has anyone with fish store clerk experience had a 100% batch of Cardinals ship? Even my lfs they drop like flies after shipping. I cut out the middle man....took the loss myself but paid considerable less per fish. In the end it will hopefully work out.

If I had another fish DOA I would be a bit more alarmed. With this Cardinal tetra things are a bit different.

And there's the catch. You really don't know whether you come out ahead or not until a few weeks down the road when its safe to say which fish are healthy and which ones didn't make it. Online ordering is a scary proposition for me and this is exactly why. I don't like the idea of buying fish that I can't closely examine prior to purchase. I've been (not so) patiently waiting for my lfs to get more in for quite a while. Hopefully pretty soon, I'm getting anxious.

Yeah, pictures like that have made me come to terms with the fact that I will have to cross this bridge eventually if I want something simliar. I'm not quite ready yet though. Watching your project from afar will let me know if I will ever be ready. Keep the updates coming.

TY Larry I have my fingers crossed too!!
I will keep you guys posted...

LOL this is too funny...member I said there are two groups on either side of the tank? well....one group is showing signs of tetraitis...you know nipping having fun..the normal stuff...they are all colored up...its great....well the other group isnt doing soo good they are still pale in color and staying low on the bottom...I tried to scare them over to the other group LOL...it seems they are all doing a bit better in general tho. I just looked over right now and they are spread all over the tank all of them with a beaming red bottom the iridecent blue has returned. I am preparing water for a change right now.

Must have been a hefty price tag...

I bought 8 cardinals from a less than worthy LFS a year ago and every last one of them are still going strong. Maybe I got lucky?

Hope you enjoy them! They are my favorite tetra and I've been meaning to get more. Can't wait for some tank pics

Testing avatar!!!

Nope they were 5 times cheaper then the lfs so that absorbed the shipping costs. I tried the lfs in Project Cardinal Tetra I and it didnt work out. This approach was my next step.

Ive read alot of posts that states this fish dies easily in transport.

Check out more pictures here if you didnt see them already.

Where did you order these fish from? I hear everyone say that mail order is so much cheaper than the LFS, but when I compare most places to my store, its about the same.

Colleen,
Well they WERE cheaper then the lfs then add on shipping...its about the same after your all said and done. The survival % and costs play a bigger role in determining if you made out good or not...this only pertains to delicate fish like this Cardinal tetra....if I had soo much as one Discus DOA on me that would be devastating and WAY less acceptable.

I would be happy to share my source with you. I wont make it public because of certain reasons but I am more then happy to share it.
Basically... I dont want my negative experiences to tarnish someones reputation.

Christine,
Full tank shots after I have overcome my "aquascaping shyness".

BTW...one Cardinal was floating this morning...only one. WAY better the Project Cardinal Tetra I. I am still over the 50% survival rate and am happy so far.

I love these fish. I'm glad to see a thread about Cardinals in this forum. They are the cream of the crop in the tetra world, in my opinion. I stopped into the LFS today and finally they had some in. I grabbed 10 of them. I'm working on a big school like the article points to. How's your school doing, FF, after another day gone by??

I havent pulled a dead one out in at least 12 hours. I'll post my "Cardinal Shoal" saga on my website.

My Discus are laying eggs right now and the other one is fertilizing them i guess I have awesome pictures I just put a crappy one up in the cichlid forum.
