Has anyone done this? The snails I see in the lfs' look terrible if you can find them.Ive seen recently some folks offering purple and blue brig clutches with hatching directions shipped really cheap.Been wanting some snails larger than my pond snails for a while now,was wondering how good an idea this is.

Larry-- Why not just order snails? Plenty of members here offer them for sale. Also, you can buy them at places like aquabid. Either way you will know what you are getting better than with a clutch that may or may not hatch.
The following statement is true. The previous statement was false.

I "won" the snail clutch, expect to see it tomorrow any tips would be appreciated,I have somewhat hard alkaline water, have a 20g with some algae and java moss I could evict the current occupants from,or would I be better off hatching in a tray of tank water than transferring?I know I have to make a raft of some sort to float the eggs on.Have an old coral decoration I could smash up and some seahells, and reptical i could use,Ill be in the city thursday could pick up supplies then. The person Im getting them from sells Iodine supplements is this something other snailkeepers use?I saw Pamelas recipe for snail cookies figure Ill brew up a batch of those.

Any tips/advice/guidance would be greatly appreciated, only kept snails most people consider pests before this.

Hi Larry. Sorry your not getting many responses. I skipped this post just because I don't have experience with clutches on-line???

"I have somewhat hard alkaline water"

What is your PH? If it's over say....7.4, but not over 8.4, it should be fine. Crushed coral can be added, no problem.

Just me, but I hatch into a 10g. I know many who allow them to hatch right in the adult tank with no problems....just kind of hard for me to keep track of pinhead size babies in my 40g

You will need to create a "Float" for the clutches. I use a piece of 1/2" styrofoam, but it can get bumped and flip over. You can use a small container, float them on styrofoam in there? I've done that. I've also placed the styro in a breeder and allowed them to hatch into that.... Like this :-)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v196/Mamaschild/Oddballs/04_12_20Babies4.jpg

There are also "camping" soap dishes that have suction cups to hold them onto things. They have the slots in the bottom, and work fabulous for hatching clutches....wish I could find some

Chemicals.....not my strong suite, but here goes. I use Kent's Liquid Calcium with every water change. I've used Iodine, but keep forgetting I also add a "gel-filled" calcium capsule to my snail cookies. I puncture it and add the gel right to the mix.

Hope that helps out some. If you have more questions, let me know :-)

Larry is you go to http://www.applesnail.net/ into the discussion area, then to DIY, they have snail hatcheries there. I also believe gopi or MF made a great little snail hatchery out of plastic canvas. I could be wrong though lol, sometimes posts really get jumbled in my head.

Next time your lurking pop in a say hello.
Instead of the crisscross mesh underneath I have also glued styrofoam strips to the bottom.

Hey Larry,

Sorry you haven't received your package yet.

It's late, the computer I'm on, my computer has actually crashed and I'm working towards getting it up and running again. I know that sounds crazy that I've found a way to be on the internet even though 99% of my computer is non-functioning right now. And I babble on........

I hope I'm confused and that you didn't pay $10 to $15 for one clutch. I tried to reread, but I'm still confused.

I just wanted you to know that I didn't forget about you wanting purple stripes. I only have 2 and their both males and my ivories are male and my blues are male, and the male thing goes on and on............

Long story short, I haven't had any clutches since I made my last two shipments.

I wish you the best of luck!

Debra the clutch was $4 charged $6 for priority mail and $2.50 for a heat pack.Recieved the clutch today postmarked 3/22. It was packed in a big roll of fiberglass insulation and the heat pack was cold.In a little plastic cup with holes in top with a bunch of cotton balls one of which was wet.Clutch was cold and dry, some of the eggs broken.I found one of those camping soap dishes Shari mentioned and drained 1/4 of the water out of 1 of of my 20g tanks and attached the dish so its barely out of the water and carefully slightly misted the clutch.
Since it was cold I dont hold out a lot of hope that it will hatch but I figured Id give it my best shot anyway, bought the kent calcium and Iodine supplements today and measured some in the tank.
I got my fingers crossed.

I'm glad it arrived, and I hope it brings you lots of itty-bitty babies!

I have an idea for you. Now this is just a thought not really advice.

You could buy a couple of adult brigs from your LFS and provide them with pristine water, quality food, and Kents is a wonderful product. You would be providing them with a "safe" home and they could provide you with a few hundred little healthy babies.

That's just an idea in case the clutch you have now doesn't hatch.

I wish I had some little ones for you, and I have my fingers crossed for you too!

Larry, you can ask around applesnail.net. There are sooo many breeders of quality breeders there, and then when you get a purple clutch you could send Debra Ann a girly.
All is well that ends well, lol.
I have read of clutches hatching when people had the least hope for them, so keep trying, it may still work!

Just went down to do my morning feedings and I have hatching!!!!!!!!! lots of little snailies all over the bottom must have hatched yesterday while I was at work.
Put some "clean" java moss(no pond snails) in the tank and a seeded sponge filter from the guppy tank in there with them a little spirulena flake.Gotta find my algae scraper got some nice green algae growing in another tank.Already put some kent calcium and iodine in there.Anything else I should do other than this?

They will be big enough for you to see in no time!

My magnifying glass does let me see things that I can't see on my own. Getting yourself one isn't a bad idea.

Clutches will usually produce more than one color, only time will tell exactly what color they will be.

Here is a link to the many foods that provide them with a boost of calcium.

I just mash them and drop them in.

They are not a favorite food for "my" snails though. They have always gone crazy for green beans, and small pieces of soft fruit.

Try small bits of different types of food. You can use frozen, fresh or canned. As long as the food is soft they will usually eat it.

Be careful not to put too much real food in your tank, it will easily foul your water.

Experiment and you will figure out what yours prefer.

They love green beans. If you buy canned beans you can give them one and then eat the rest yourself!

Have fun! ;}
