Thank you everyone!!!

I am proud to announce that when I woke up this morning I took attendance. All of the Discus were upright and the Brilliant Blues were in a school in the middle of the 90 gallon stretching from the top to the bottom, its marvelous!!!

The Red Turqs are all upright also, one of them has some fin damage. I dont know if its is from shipping or what. I will look into this later and probably ask for help if it looks serious.

I just did a 10% water change and I am going to do so daily for the first few weeks. Then maybe kick it down to twice a week. I dont know.

FYI.. the larger 3-3.5" Brilliant Blue are in my 90 gallon and the smaller 2.5" Red Turqs are in my 65 gallon. More pictures coming soon! Thanks again!

Hi flyingfish,
I'm angry with you for not letting my know in advance( Not really ). Congratulations!

So how many did you get?

I just got a new one from a fish auction that I went to this weekend ( Red Turquoise ). He has had some fin damage also but is well on the way to recovery. I can see he has been re-growing them.
If you go through a day without learning something new, you wasted it!

Randy,
Hey sorry, HEHE. I got 5 medium Brilliant Blue & 1 free Discus with that purchase which I think is a Blue Diamond. I got 6 small Red Turqs from another purchase. 12 total, 6 in each tank.

I hope to see the little guy doing better when I get home. At least it isnt laying on it's side on the bottom of the tank like it was last night. I wasnt too concerned with the laying down because they werent breathing heavy, I blamed the transit for them acting that way, sure enough most of em sprang back to life in front of my own eyes.

I will probably change water again when I get home. I dont know for sure yet but I will probably end up changing water daily. I will know after everything settles down and stress is reduced. It is kinda of a strange spidey sense I have now for changing water. No test results or anyting like that provokes me to change the water, if I waited that long the fish would be dead. Im sure I am not the only one with this sense but It has just sort of evolved lately. You sorta just get a feeling the water needs to be changed. Heck I hope I am not the only one that feels this!

I cant wait to get home!!!!

Very nice looking fish. I am glad the shipment worked out for you. I have thought about it, but most either will not ship to Alaska, or charge twice as much for shipping. Then if the worst happens I would have to pay to ship again... Really happy it worked out for you though.

Ant, cant you look outside your window and see Orca? Or something beautiful like that? Living in Alaska has pros and cons. I would NOT ship in winter to Alaska wait for summer and hook up. I will do what I can to help you.

Shari, TY I think I stressed enough for all the fish combined.

I have seen alot of things since moving here a few months ago, but nothing I can keep in my living room... Just glad I have found some not so LFS. I found green terrors and black belts, not all bad.
Yours is not to question why, mine is to buy fish and die.

Steve thanks alot. I have alot to say about them.

I am a first time Discus keeper here are my initial comments. I picked mail order Discus because of the quality, selection and pricing. The shipping is rough and maybe not for a beginner. Time needs to be devoted to acclimations, a full day is prefered. Smaller Discus tend to beat themselves up during shipping and need pristine water quality to bounceback. The large ones need pristine water as well to show well and look healthy.

I find it very comical that a fish that needs the best water quality also eats the messy food. I feed them beefheart and it can get a bit messy. More maintenance. They sure do love it tho!

The social behavior or the fish is remarkable. My wife said "they are like elephants". This wasnt to suprising to hear her say this, It was suprising to hear her say it so early. She has barely seen them interact. Here is an example... When the fish first arrived. Out of the box they all were practically lifeless. Acclimation process woke them up slowly then they were put into the tank. They sat, some of them laying down, on the bottom of the tank. As each of them woke up they seemed to greet one another and stayed together in a pack. As each of them woke up the pack ran over and greeted the new one. My wife saw a different episode and dont want to bore anyone even further.

As far as lights and plants go here is my .
These Discus are not shy, not afraid of light and the beefheart sticks in the plants and keeps the food elevated. Everything works out great and isnt a real pain to clean. I do have a pack of huungry Apistos tho! The lights are on normal schedule and as you can see from the pictures the Discus are hardly stressed. I have like 3 watts per gallon.

Thank you everyone for the comments. I will try to keep some updates flying around.

LOL. Id like to send a big shout out to everyone in the fish health section for helping me out with my original problem. Joe for the acclimation hints. Erin, Brad, Sully and live plants section for helping me with plants. Shari for tempting pictures of fish that seem to just keep coming. And everyone else around here that puts in the comments that make the days go by. I could probably go on for the rest of the afternoon putting names in here and helpful things people have said!!! Sorry if this is too personal.

FF I don't mind hearing about the fish stories at all, infact I rather like the ones about the fish I find interesting. I am to much of a rookie to even think about the Discus, so the stories fill the need for now.
The other fish I am really interested in are the German blue rams...these I think I can handle:-)
Thanks and looking forward to the updates.

Good to hear! I just felt it was appropriate to thank everyone, I had to add that.
I have been thinking about Rams and really want to get a pair. I dont know how they will mix with my other dwarfs and right now I dont have the room to support the consequences. I am working on setting up a 20gallon long with lights/co2 and filtration. They may be a candidate.

Well Steve, Check out the my Apisto post and you will see that I will not be getting any Rams. I have bit of work ahead of me sorting out what I already have. Id still like to get the Rams but I need another tank or a dreamy community tank that exceeds 200 gallons.

The Red Turqs have about 1/2 their fins back. Some are better then others but they are growing back. There is no fungus or anything just some fraying. I am keeping the water clean and making sure all of them eat. They practically eat out of my hand now and it takes alot to spook them.

The larger blue discus are very shy. I dug out under a root for them to chill out in and they love it. There is a few of them that are coming around and the other shy ones follow them around. They are eating great. I had an issue where one of them knocked the heater off the suction cup brace, it spooked them and one of them bounced his nose on the brace and cut it, another one had a horrible scratch all down the side of it. Most unfortunate.....Well they are doing better now and all wounds are healed. I didnt do anything but keep the water clean. They healed just fine on their own. I am looking into securing the heater better and removing any sharp object out of the tank. Discus seem to be a bit clumbsy when they are frantic and beat themselves up alot. Try to avoid spooking them.....kind of obvious I guess. I will keep you all posted.

Yea.....Sooooo.....About that myth?? about Discus and bright lights...I have a new Orbit Extreme powercompact fixture with a 10000k 6000k dual daylight 130 watt bulb along with its counterpart actinic bulb going 260 watts total and the Discus have finaly come out from hiding. They practically ate out of my hands like the younger Discus now do. Maybe they finally came around? Well the new bright light didnt discourage them much......new pictures of the Brilliant Blue coming soon! This light is BRIGHT!

Thanks Brad, you were a great help when I was getting over my Apistos territorial issues. I'll cya around at the Apistogramma forum.

Because my views are soo different then others (like using water right from the tap, let alone hot tap water) I am agitating the board and I may as well not stick around here. I am a problem because I dont want to take the advice of others and disagree with what I am assuming is the majority of the board. I had assumed that because I received a PM from a moderator representing this board using the words "us" then questioning why I hang around at all. Cya!
