Hi,
I plan on starting a Mini-reef tank that is above another tank.

I was wondering, will the heat from the lights of the tank underneath cause a problem with bio-properties of the sand/crushed coral?

Are they just PC's or NO flourescents? if so, the heat shouldn't be a problem.

Hi patm,
The tank on the bottom has 130 wats of Compact floresent lighting. It does get warm and the heat rising does warm the bottom on the tank above. when the SW tank has water in it I don't expect that the heat will raise the temp of the hole tank, but the substrate might go up a degree or two.
If you go through a day without learning something new, you wasted it!

I would say don't worry about it. The only precaution you may have to take would be in the summer, if you have consistent high temps. Then I would run some kind of fan to try to keep temps at an acceptable level.
