I have read many mixed things about feeding puffers. Some say they need snails to survive and some say they don't. So what's the scoop?

They need to file down their teeth. Their teeth keep growing to the point where they can`t open or close their mouths, preventing them from eating. Unless you want to do `puffer dentistry` quite often, it`s best to feed them something that helps keep those teeth worn down.

Snails are an easy way to do that and a more than sustainable food. All crustancians(sp?) are good but snails are better.

The point is, yes, feed your puffer snails.
