Anyone experienced in keeping Gourami? Can you recommend
what type of Gourami would be suitable for a 29 gallon tank
(30 inches long 18 high). Must be a community fish
that is not aggresive towards others.

I had problems with dwarf honey gourami. They fought until
the beat each other up. This was in a smaller 15 gal tank
so you may have less trouble. I have heard some of the larger
ones are more peaceful, maybe someone else can fill you
in on which ones.

In regards to flame dwarf gourami, I have 2. The first one
was a bully and harrassed the other fish and stressed them
big time. I put him in a 10 gallon tank and got a companion.
The new guy immediately got chased around, and I put him
in the community tank where he does fine. So for myself,
I consider dwarf gourami a risk. They're supposedly
docile, but not always so. Seems to me the postings I've
seen with gourami trouble has always been dwarfs. Could
be the normal sized ones are not such a risk..?

I was thinking of Blue Gourami as well as dwarf gourami.
My only concern with the Blue is whether my tank is large
enough to accomodate them as they get to be up to 4 inches
and may require more room to swim

The blue gourami is a favorite of mine. I just set my tank
back up recently after being out of it for several years.
Unfortunately, nothing would keep the one blue g from bullying
the other to the point the other was miserable. Separated
out the bully for return to the fish store. Brought home
a different one and from that point on, all was peaceful.
I believe I had two females at the beginning. I made sure
the replacement for the bully was male.

A 29 gal tank has enough room for 2 4inch gourami as far
as swimming space goes. I keep 2 6 inch angels in my 29gallon.
Both species are rather slow swimming and don't tend
to dart around the tank. The only concern with the gourami
is whether they will get aggressive and like Shan I consider
the dwarf variety risky. If I were to try again I think
I would try a lace or pearl gourami. Maybe the best way
to go is ask if your LFS will do an exchange if they start
fighting.
