I just purchased a beta. He is being housed in a 1 gal low
bowl. I think I remember readng on one of these posts that
salt added to his water is not needed but should keep him
healthier. I don't want to start the whole salt in freshwater
issue, only the salt for betas issue.
Kick I believe you are the resident beta guru, what do you
do.
Also how likely is it that he will jump. If it is high what
should I cover his bowl with.

Steven, Kick has a very informative article about Bettas
on this website. I think it answers all your questions.

Trust me, he will jump. You need to cover the top of the
bowl with something such as wedding veil net or plastic
craft canvas to keep him where he belongs.
You won't open up the salt/freshwater debate where bettas
are concerned. It is something very necessary for the betta
at the amount of 1 teaspoon per l gallon of water. This
wonderful substance keeps fins from rotting, velvet or ick
from attacking plus it keeps his slime coat healthy.
As Scout said I have an article here at badmans (under
the article section on the main page) that should answer
any questions you may have about caring for your new pet.
If you need anything else, just yell at me via email or
post your message here. If I don't get back to the board
for a couple of days, someone usually yells at me to let
me know a betta post is present.

we talking table salt or aquarium salt? i keep a betta in
a bowl and it hasn't jumped and appears to be perfectly
healthy. will the salt make him look prettier and show off
those fins even more?

You can purchase aquarium salt at any LFS store. It's
very cheap and probably the better thing to use.

COVER THE BOWL! Just because he hasn't jumped yet doesn't
mean he's not going too. I use a piece of fly-screen.
I learnt the hard way.
