If you paint the exterior of the tank, your best bet is
to use an acrylic. Reason being is that they dry fast and
easy cleanup. Acrylics are water based and easily found
in non-toxic formulas. Because they are water-based, water
can soften the dryed paint, but will never reconstitute
the paint. So if the dry paint gets wet, just let it alone
and let the water dry. Another reason I would choose an
acrylic is that if you change your mind some day and want
to change the painted black background to a paper one or
a painted blue background, this would be the least amount
of effort to remove as far as paints are concerned. With
a razor blade this paint will peel with minimal effort,
while any oil or enamal will slowly chip while vigorously
scraping(had to do it and was alot of work).

I would use an Interior wall or an Interior/Exterior. As
long as it is Acryilc it wont harm the fish. If you use
an artist's acrylic the paint will be quite rubbery.

I use poster board with my tank. Lot easier to take off
than paint if you change your mind. just my $.02

Agree with chris...If you run your tanks like mine...there
will be changes every so often with decor and background
and the posters are easier. Some LFS's don't have
a really good selection so try other stores before you give
the painting a try.
My opinion isn't even worth $.02 ©¿©
