Hi. I just bought an Oscar and I'm wondering what to
feed him. I have shrip pellets and freeze-dried bloodworms
along with a lot of flake food. Is it okay to feed him flakes
with a supplement of pellets/bloodworms once a week? Or
should I only feed him the pellet and bloodworms? Thanks
for any advice you can give.

My book says to vary their diet. I think most pellets can
have the same nutritional content of flakes depending on
which type you buy. I know my festivum really prefer the
cichlid pellets more than the flake and I think they actually
leave less waste. Anyways it's probably better if you
can feed the variety so they don't get hooked on one
type of food.

My mom has an 8" oscar and she feeds it a mixture of
Knox-nutra joint (a gelatin) and shrimp pellets!
Now it won't eat anything but this mixture. The fish
is doin fine and is now about 9 years old.

Oscars won't eat flakes for long. As they grow they
start ignoring small pieces of food. I feed mine Hikari
Cichlid Pellets, Frozen peeled shrimp (from the grocery
store), frozen blood worms.. variety is the key I think.
Oh and I have been feeding them alot of freeze dried krill.
They love it. I recently read that food high in protein
will cause them to grow faster. The krill I have is 60%
protein and they have grown 1 and 1/2 inches in the last
month.
In the wild they naturally eat alot of insects - crickets
and worms are also highly recommended. Hope that helps.
