Hi i am getting back into the hobby after a 15 year absence.
I am setting up a 40G Tank and was wondering if the Emperor
400 filter is too much for this tank. Some people say u
should Flow 10 times ur tank size and some say less what
is the proper amount. Also has anyone used this filter is
it just bio wheels or does it have media cartrages in it
also. I saw this filter at http://www.petwarehouse.com
and its 45.99 is that a good price. Sorry for all the newbie
questions but i have never used a power filter before. My
previous tank was a 10G with a box filter.
Thanks for all your help and i love this board so many nice
people to help u.

Dennis, I know that the filter has 2 disposable media cartridges,
as well as 2 refillable cartridges. All four fit in at the
same time. It really is a great filter. I had the 280 on
my thirty gallon and it worked great.

Dennis, might I suggest the 280 for this size tank. I have
a 400 on my 55 which works great, and 280's on my 29
and 38 gallon with no problems. The Emporer 280 has a biowheel
and a compartment large enough for the premade media cartridge
plus a slot for addition media should you so choose. The
400 has two compartments and 2 biowheels. Please remember
that once the biowheels are put in place, they should never
be touched, rinsed or replaced as this is where a good portion
of bacteria is housed. Let me know if you have any other
questions.

Gosh Dennis I've been checking flow rates for filtration
for the past year and I never heard of 10 times for an average
tropical community fish tank! I think most people actually
recommend about 5 times. I have African Rift Lake Cichlid
which need lots of filtration due to fish density to dispel
aggresion and depleted oxygen at high ph values and I only
go with 7 times! I think you may blow some of the more peaceful
fish out of the water if your current is to strong. It should
say on the box what tank the 400 is appropriate for. I know
I run a 300 aquaclear on my 40 gallon and 55 gallon community
tanks and that is more than adequate for my angels and festivum.
