I think that my beta is not eating the regular flakes. will
they eat tubefex worms or brine shrimp cubes until I can
get "beta food"?

fishman, my betta would never eat flakes. I have two bettas
and only one of them would eat freeze dried bloodworms and
only for a short while. I now feed them Betta Bites, Hikari
Betta Bio Gold, and frozen bloodworms. They eat very well
and I don't have any more problems. Hope this helps.
Also check out Kick's article (here on Badman's
site) about Bettas. Kick's an expert and can give
you lots of good advice.

fishman, Nancy is telling you correctly. Usually the flakes
get a turned up nose. Betta bites are your best bet if he
will take them. They are made to provide all the nutrients
that your betta needs. If he is young, you might find that
he tries to eat but ends up spitting them back out. You
will especially see this with the biogold food. This is
because his gullet will not allow the pellet to go down.
You can try to break it apart to make it smaller or just
hope that he is getting enough from the pieces to fill his
tummy. If you fear he is not getting enough by the bites,
try small pieces of freeze dried blood worms. I usually
feed those to mine as treats. If this little fella is new
to you, it could be that he has not become accustomed to
his surroundings just yet and after a while, he will come
around to be a vigorous eater in the end. Good luck and
let us know if you need anything else.
