I have a 20 gallon tank with an undergravel filter. The
gravel has white stuff "growing" in it. It clings
to the gravel and makes it clump together on the surface.
Anyone know what it is? Is it something I need to get rid
of...or is this normal? I have had the tanks for over a
year, this is the first time I have seen this. Please let
me know...

It is whiteish when it grow above the gravel, and binds
the small peices of gravel together below the rocks. I can
pick a clump up and get some of the gravel off, but it clings
really well. It is soft. I don't know know how else
to describe it...

OH MY GOSH - THAT'S WHAT I HAVE!!!!!!!
Go and check out my post in the General area. It sounds
like it might be bacteria (perhaps living of excess
food) and could be a sign of deteriorating water quality
(hope not!). I just use the gravel siphon to get
rid of it. Plus that will pick up any decaying food that
it's feeding off. It's interesting how you've
had your tank set up for over a year and I've had mine
for about a week and we both have the same problem - it
makes you wonder how many other people have it without realising
it. I only noticed mine when a I shone a torch into the
tank (I don't have tank lights yet) to see that
all was well (and as it turns out it wasn't!).
I'm so glad I found your post!

Sierra & Beth, I posted something about this in Sierra's
post in the other section. Most likely fungus, but you can
continue the thread there.

Thanks for the info. I appreciate your answering my questions.
I did a partial water change again this week and have cut
back on the food. I have mostly bottom feeders in my tank,
several cories and a small clown pleco, 2 rainbows are the
only other occupants. I had been feeding some type of sinking
pellet everyday. thanks again!
